|Time to run the dogs!|
Of all the various hunting, angling, and conservation organizations that I belong to, perhaps my very favorite is Retrievers Unlimited HRC. Retrievers Unlimited is our local chapter of the Hunting Retriever Club.
The Preamble of the Hunting Retriever Club, Inc. Constitution states its primary purpose to be: "...the betterment of Hunting Retrievers as a whole and to influence the breeding and training of a better and finer Hunting Retriever; to provide hunters and Hunting Retrievers a series of actual Hunting tests in a controlled system and furnish an ongoing educational program for the Hunters, for their training, experience, and sporting competition. Further, it is the purpose of this Association to support and protect the inherent rights of its members to own, hunt, bear arms, to promote the breed and type of dog of their choice and promote complimentary conservation and management of game birds and wildlife species commonly pursued by the members of the Hunting Retriever Club, Inc."
This past weekend was one of the monthly training days that our club hosts from February through October. We suspend the training days during waterfowl season, as our dogs are working hard every day in the field, doing what the do best. Retrieving.
Hands down some of the best retrievers in the Midwest show up early on Saturday mornings to work the fields and lakes of Peabody River King Fish and Wildlife Area. Stories are shared, hugs are passed out, get well and birthday cards for other members are signed, gallons of coffee are consumed and we train. We train, we visit, we help each other out, and most of all we just enjoy our time afield - running the dogs.
